York College Events announces the 2020 Southeast Queens Biennial for will showcase 10 local artists using mediums such as mixed media, paintings, audio, photography, interactive displays. This year’s theme will have each artist exploring their identity by expressing what “Home” means to them in regards to community. The showcase will have a nine-week run and can be seen at two locations: the York College Fine Arts Gallery and the William P. Miller Gallery at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning. One of the curators, Margaret Rose Vendryes, Chair of the Department of Performing and Fine Arts, is enthusiastic about the importance of the project saying, “There are very few venues that are open in Southeast Queens, so I came up with… having that biennial theme centered on artists who are working in making art in Queens.” Nicholas Fraser’s showcase features two pieces from his Left Hanging series constructed using tyvek, a synthetic fiber material. The sculpture on the left is called DreamOfOcean and the right is JJ. Here the artist uses text-based sculptures that are quotes from his unanswered messages from his attempts at online dating. The recipients remain anonymous but it is intended to explore the artists humility turned pride in showing the audience a personal tendency to overshare. The letters are hand cut and left hanging, creating and brooding effect.
Tiger White, Far Rockaway – Queens based artist pursued photography during Superstorm Sandy and now tries to capture the “vulnerability of the human expression”. The photographs Altered Swan, right and Opal, left showcased here shows the artists developed talents and use of rich colors that are complemented by deep shadows. Both shots contrast the other, showing the range of human emotion seen here being pensive versus using color to evoke a serene tone.
