Facebook Supreme Court Verdict on Trump

by Jodi Samuels

Trump in “Facebook Supreme Court” was probably the last thing the social media giant wanted to face.  NPR reported on Facebook’s oversight committee’s findings that Trump’s social media ban was warranted.  This ruling has only staved off Facebook’s critics and one can only assume as it gets closer to a more direct decision at the end of the six-month lifeline.

This will be an all-out war against the giant and I think unchartered territory that Facebook execs might even want to delay.  At some point there must be a sacrificial lamb and Facebook may have the revenue and leverage to take the hit.  There has been so much talk from the various social media platforms regarding implementing regulations but at some point, they must walk the walk.  The more unchecked misinformation, the poster child of misinformation being Trump, flows through the platforms the more difficult it will be for the country to have consequential conversations around bridging the fundamental gaps that the county has.

Trump really is not the issue, but he has become the manifestation of grievances of the other half that have been simmering in the country that we had failed to be cautious of.  He is the consequence of a country that wants to embrace progress but was not truly ready.
