After reviewing both “Snowfall” and “Kowloon Walled City: Explore the City” from the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, the possibilities with delivering news online in an innovative way has been expanded. Both articles managed to uniquely engage their audience using widely different concepts and techniques but still succeeded in making the reader invested in the story. Kowloon can simply be described as an experience with an explorative immersion. It had a bit of everything that made it interesting would be the navigation of clicking various sections of the house, both encouraging to take in the history and improving the attention span or the reader. It’s natural to want to skim through an article but this way the reader can control the information so that it does not come off as overwhelming.
“Snowfall” took a different direction that was more saturated with information. Although it was a much longer read, the article had a more novelization approach that pulls in the reader. It incorporated multimedia that added depth to break up the long text. This allowed the reader to still maintain connection to the story and not be overwhelmed by inserting a video or graphics. This can still be appreciated as the writer successfully uses the “show, don’t tell” technique by describing the harsh environment and the capturing the emotions of the survivors.
